It’s almost time, just three more sleeps and then it’s Busworld time again! Finally, after the pandemic break two years ago, Busworld opens its doors in Brussels from 7 to 12 October. without a doubt the fair the bus industry has been waiting for. Do business. Learn. Meet bus people. Have fun. – that is Busworld.
The final preparations are underway, the stands are being set up and buses are being shunted back and forth in the halls of Brussels Expo until they are perfectly positioned in the right light. Then they are polished and covered so that something new can be presented before the eyes of the press.
Something new was also the handover of the management of Busworld: founder Luc Gloreiux handed over his life’s work to his daughter and to Patrick Van Impe. The Belgian history teacher, born in West Flanders, got involved as secretary of the West Flemish Association of Touring and Scheduled Bus Operators.
Later he became director of the Belgian Association of Coach and Bus Operators (BAAV), vice-chairman of Tourism Flanders and chairman of the Tourism Industry Association of Belgium (FTI). Then Luc Glorieux had the idea of setting up a European coach and bus fair.
That was in 1971. What began as Car et Bus in its birthplace of Kortrijk on an area of 500 square metres is now THE most important trade fair for the bus industry. Numerous offshoots followed in Lagos (Nigeria), Shanghai (China), Bombay (India), Detroit (USA) and Istanbul (Turkey).
The concept became more and more popular, the exhibition centre of the Belgian city in the province of West Flanders became too small over the years, and even temporary tent halls were of no use. A new location was needed, the exhibition halls in Brussels now offer sufficient space – and still potential for further growth.
From 7 to 12 October 2023, the 26th edition of Busworld, the most important – and also the largest in purely quantitative terms – trade fair for buses and coaches, will take place again at the Brussels Expo exhibition centre. The entire spectrum will be on offer – from small mini- to double-deckers, from diesel to electric or hydrogen buses, all the players in the bus world will be present. The trade fair reports an increase in exhibitors, a proud 27 percent more in 2023!
Trends and innovations that can be expected at Busworld Europe 2023 include FCEV buses, now that BEV buses have established themselves in regular urban transport. And, of course, digital solutions or digital supplements, which are increasingly finding their way into the bus world.
For the first time, the Busworld trade fair and the European Zero Emission Bus Conference (ZEB) will meet. The fifth ZEB conference expects 450 participants from the zero-emission bus sector. What is new here is not only the collaboration between the Busworld Foundation and the ZEB, but also the focus on zero-emission long-distance buses.
According to Mieke Glorieux’s organisation team, more than 500 exhibitors have registered so far – a corresponding list is available on the Busworld website. What can one expect from Busworld 2023? Mieke Glorieux sums it up like this: “The largest exhibition for buses and coaches in the world with the latest vehicles, components and accessories. Alongside there will be interesting conferences and seminars on electrification, digitalisation and safety. And of course, as always, it will be THE bus party of the year with a balanced mix of business and pleasure.”
The 26th Busworld, planned for 2021 and then postponed to October this year, will then now celebrate its 50th birthday. When asked by omnibus.news how the half century of Busworld could be summed up in just one picture, Mieke Glorieux said: “I see a picture of visitors and exhibitors together with our animation team, singing, dancing and enjoying themselves together. Busworld is always really fun, isn’t it?”

Es ist fast so weit, nur noch dreimal schlafen, dann ist wieder Busworld time! Endlich, nach der pandemiebedingten Pause vor zwei Jahren öffnet die Busworld vom 7. bis 12. Oktober in Brüssel ihre Türen. zweifelsohne die Messe, auf die die Busbranche gewartet hat. Do business. Learn. Meet bus people. Have fun. – das ist die Busworld.
Aktuell laufen die letzten Vorbereitungen, die Messestände werden aufgebaut und Omnibusse in den Hallen der Brussels Expo hin und her rangiert, bis sie perfekt ins rechte Licht gerückt wurden. Dann wird poliert und verhüllt, damit vor den Augen der Presse etwas Neues präsentiert werden kann.
Etwas Neues war auch die Übergabe der Leitung der Busworld: Gründer Luc Gloreiux übergab sein Lebenswerk an seine Tochter und an Patrick Van Impe. Der in Westflandern geborene belgische Geschichtslehrer engagierte sich als Sekretär des Westflämischen Verbandes der Reise- und Linienbusunternehmer ein.
Später wurde er Direktor des Verbandes der Belgischen Reise- und Linienbusunternehmer (BAAV), Vizevorsitzender von Tourismus Flandern und Vorsitzender des Verbandes der Tourismusindustrie Belgiens (FTI). Dann hatte Luc Glorieux die Idee, eine europäische Linien- und Reisebusmesse auf die Räder zu stellen.
Das war 1971, was in seiner Geburtsstadt Kortrijk auf einer Fläche von 500 Quadratmeter als Car et Bus begann, ist heute DIE bedeutenste Messe für die Busbranche. Es folgten zahlreiche Ableger in Lagos (Nigeria), Shanghai (China), Bombay (Indien), Detroit (USA) und Istanbul (Türkei).
Das Konzept erhielt immer mehr Zuspruch, das Messegelände der belgischen Stadt in der Provinz Westflandern wurde im Laufe der Jahre zu klein, auch provisorisch aufgestellte Zelthallen nützten nichts. Es musste ein neuer Standort her, die Messehallen in Brüssel bieten nun ausreichend Platz – und immer noch Potential für weiteres Wachstum.
Vom 07. bis zum 12. Oktober 2023 findet auf dem Messegelände der Brüssel Expo mit 26. Ausgabe der Busworld wieder die wichtigste – und auch rein quantitativ größte – Fachmesse für Busse statt. Geboten wird das gesamte Spektrum – vom kleinen Mini- bis zum Doppeldecker, vom Diesel- bis Elektro- oder Wasserstoffbus geben sich alle Aktuere der Buswelt ein Stelldichein.Die Messe meldet ein Plus an Ausstellern, stolze 27 Prozent mehr sind es in 2023!
Als Trends und Innovationen, die man auf der Busworld Europe 2023 erwarten kann, können, nachdem sich BEV-Busse im städtischen Linienverkehr behauptet haben, FCEV-Busse genannt werden. Und natürlich digitale Lösungen oder digitale Ergänzungen, die immer mehr Einzug in due Buswelt halten.
Zum ersten Mal treffen die Busworld Messe und die European Zero Emission Bus Conference (ZEB) aufeinander. Die fünfte ZEB Konferenz erwartet 450 Teilnehmer aus dem Nullemission-Bussektor. Neu ist hierbei nicht nur die Kollaboration zwischen der Busworld Foundation und der ZEB, sondern auch der Fokus auf Nullemission-Fernbussen.
Bislang seien, so das Organisationsteam um Mieke Glorieux, über 500 Aussteller angemeldet – ein entsprechendes Verzeichnis gibt es auf der Website der Busworld. Was kann man von der Busworld 2023 erwarten? Mieke Glorieux bringt es so auf den Punkt: “Die größte Ausstellung für Omnibusse der Welt mit den neuesten Fahrzeugen, Komponenten und Zubehör. Nebenbei gibt es interessante Konferenzen und Seminare über Elektrifizierung, Digitalisierung und Sicherheit. Und natürlich wird es wie immer DIE Omnibusparty des Jahres mit einer ausgewogenen Mischung aus Business und Vergnügen sein.”
Die für 2021 geplante und dann auf Oktober dieses Jahres verschobene 26. Busworld feiert dann jetzt den 50. Geburtstag. Auf die Frage von omnibus.news, wie man das halbe Jahrhundert Busworld in nur einem Bild zusammenfassen könnte, sagte Mieke Glorieux: “Ich sehe ein Bild von Besuchern und Ausstellern zusammen mit unserem Animationsteam, die zusammen singen, tanzen und sich freuen. Die Busworld macht doch immer richtig Spaß, oder?”
Den hat Mieke Glorieux mit Inge Buytaert, verantwortlich für Marketing- und Kommunikation, schon in den durchaus letzten und stressigen Tagen vor der Eröffnung der Busworld 2023.
