Was Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (kurz CATL) im Bereich der Batterien ist, ist Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co Ltd (kurz Yutong) im Bereich der Omnibusse: Eine in China große und wichtige Marke, die weltweit bekannt ist. Am Standort Zhengzhou Yutong Industrial Park baut Yutong täglich über 300 Omnibusse.
CATL ist der größte chinesische Hersteller von Lithium-Ionen-Akkumulatoren, das Reich der Mitte dominiert den Markt für Batterien – mehr als 60 Prozent des weltweiten Bedarfs wurden im vergangenen Jahr von chinesischen Herstellern gedeckt. CATL und Yutong kooperieren seit 2012, bis 2032 besteht eine Batterie-Partnerschaft.
Bei Yutong blickt man positiv auf das jahr 2023 zurück, im Bereich der “New Energie Vehicle” (die in China die Fahrzeuge bezeichnen, die vollständig oder überwiegend mit elektrischer Energie betrieben werden (darunter BEV-, FCEV- und Plug-in- Plug-in-Hybrid-Elektrofahrzeuge)) wurden 36.518 Fahrzeuge verkauft, 20,93 % mehr als im Vorjahr.
Bis Ende 2023 hat Yutong nach eigenen Angaben 175.000 “New Energy” Omnibusse weltweit verkauft. Zur Erinnerung: Vor zwei Jahren wurde der Busbranche in Europa bewusst, dass die Marke aus China auch hierzulande angekommen war: Den europäischen Elektrobusmarkt dominiert – mit Blick auf die Neuzulassungen >8t – in 2022 die Marke Yutong!
Chatrou CME Solutions hatte seinerzeit im Rahmen der Marktbeobachtung und -analyse der alternativen Antriebe ermittelt, dass die chinesische Marke mit 479 Zulassungen und damit mit einem Plus +58% gegenüber 2021 angekommen war. Nicht in Deutschland, sondern in vor allem in Frankreich, Großbritannien und den Ländern Skandinaviens, wie omnibus.news im Gespräch mit Yutong erfahren hat.
Auch im Jahr 2023 hat Yutong in Europa (wieder mit Blick auf die Neuzulassungen >8t) mit insgesamt 483 Elektrobussen noch ein Platz auf dem Siegertreppchen erobert, wenn auch nur noch Platz 3, aber immerhin… Mit dem, was auf der Busworld 2023 in Brüssel ausgestellt wurde (vom E-Midi und den E-Gelenkbus bis zum E-Reisebus sowie den für GB entwickelten E-Doppeldecker) wird klar, das Yutong den Markt in Europa noch mehr erobern wird.
Christian Levin, Chef der Volkswagen-Truckholding Traton, sieht in Europa auch bei Nutzfahrzeugen harte Konkurrenz aus China aufziehen. Chinesische Elektrobus-Anbieter hätten sich in recht kurzer Zeit gut aufgestellt, vor allem dank ihres Zugangs zu sehr guter Batterietechnologie, sagte er der Nachrichtenagentur Bloomberg am Donnertag.
Das stimmt: Im Jahr 2023 hat die chineische Marke auch die Yutong Electric Architecture (YEA) präsentiert, was den Anspruch von Yutong deutlich macht, auch zukünftig weltweit erfolgreich zu sein. Nach eigenen Angaben investierte Yutong in Forschung und Entwicklung im letzten Jahr knapp zehn Prozent des Jahresumsatzes.
Und jetzt kündigt Yutong bzw. der Partner CATL einen Batteriepack an, das eine Lebensdauer von bis zu 15 Jahren bzw. 1,5 Millionen Kilometer haben soll. Innerhalb der ersten 1.000 Zyklen solle dies keinerlei Kapazität einbüßen. Erst im August 2023 sorgte CAT für Aufsehen, als das ultraschnelle Akku der „Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery“-Reihe vorgestellt wurde.
Die Ära der Schnellladung von Elektrofahrzeugen habe begonnen, so die Information aus China. Laut Aussagen von CATL ergebe ein zehnminütiges Laden eine Reichweite von 400 Kilometern. Mit einer Vollladung soll eine Reichweite von mehr als 700 Kilometern möglich sein.
CATL teilte seinerzeit mit, “man könne 4C erreichen”. 1C bedeutet, dass eine Batterie innerhalb von einer Stunde von null auf 100 Prozent geladen wird. Bei 4C sind es dann in nur 15 Minuten. Bei Raumtemperatur kann das neue Speichermedium in 10 Minuten auf 80 Prozent aufgeladen werden. Bei Temperaturen von bis zu -10 Grad dauere es 30 Minuten, so CATL.
Mit Blick auf das neue Batteriepack hielt man sich bei CATL mit Details zurück, Angaben zur welche Zellchemie beispielsweise wurden nicht bekanntgegeben. Stattdessen sprach man bei CATL von dem partnerschaftlichen Miteinander mit Yutong. Der größte chinesische Bushersteller wird die die neue Batterie in künftigen Elektrobussen zuerst einsetzen können. What Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL for short) is to batteries, Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co Ltd (Yutong for short) is to buses: a large and important brand in China that is recognised worldwide. At the Zhengzhou Yutong Industrial Park, Yutong builds over 300 buses every day.
CATL is the largest Chinese manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, and the Middle Kingdom dominates the market for batteries – more than 60 per cent of global demand was covered by Chinese manufacturers last year. CATL and Yutong have been cooperating since 2012 and have a battery partnership until 2032.
Yutong looks back positively on 2023: 36,518 vehicles were sold in the “new energy vehicle” segment (which in China refers to vehicles that are powered entirely or predominantly by electric energy (including BEV, FCEV and plug-in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles)), 20.93% more than in the previous year.
By the end of 2023, Yutong claims to have sold 175,000 “New Energy” buses worldwide. As a reminder: two years ago, the bus industry in Europe realised that the brand from China had also arrived in this country: the European electric bus market – in terms of new registrations >8t – will be dominated by the Yutong brand in 2022!
As part of its market observation and analysis of alternative drive systems, Chatrou CME Solutions determined that the Chinese brand had already arrived in this segment alone with 479 registrations, an increase of 58% compared to 2021 (4th place with 303 electric buses). Not in Germany, but primarily in France, the UK and the Scandinavian countries, as omnibus.news learnt in conversation with Yutong.
Even in 2023, Yutong still has a place on the winners’ podium in Europe (again with a view to new registrations >8 tonnes) with a total of 483 electric buses, albeit only in third place, but still… With what was exhibited at Busworld 2023 in Brussels (from the electric midi and the electric articulated bus to the electric coach and the electric double-decker developed for the UK), it is clear that Yutong will conquer the market in Europe even more.
Christian Levin, head of the Volkswagen truck holding company Traton, also sees tough competition from China emerging in Europe for commercial vehicles. Chinese electric bus providers have positioned themselves well in a very short space of time, mainly thanks to their access to very good battery technology, he told the Bloomberg news agency on Thursday.
That is true: In 2023, the Chinese brand also presented the Yutong Electric Architecture (YEA), which clearly demonstrates Yutong’s ambition to continue its global success in the future. According to its own figures, Yutong invested almost ten per cent of its annual turnover in research and development last year.
And now Yutong and its partner CATL are announcing a battery pack with a service life of up to 15 years or 1.5 million kilometres. This should not lose any capacity within the first 1,000 cycles. CAT first caused a stir in August 2023 when the ultra-fast battery from the “Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery” series was unveiled.
The era of fast charging for electric vehicles had begun, according to information from China. According to CATL, a ten-minute charge gives a range of 400 kilometres. With a full charge, a range of more than 700 kilometres should be possible.
CATL announced at the time that “4C could be achieved”. 1C means that a battery can be charged from zero to 100 per cent within one hour. At 4C, it takes just 15 minutes. At room temperature, the new storage medium can be charged to 80 per cent in 10 minutes. At temperatures as low as -10 degrees it takes 30 minutes, according to CATL.
With regard to the new battery pack, CATL was reluctant to provide details, for example, information on which cell chemistry was not disclosed. Instead, CATL spoke of the partnership with Yutong.
